What did Da Vinci want to accomplish with his art work?

Da Vinci was very experimental. Much of his work is believed to be symbolic, but mostly he was just trying to innovate. Like painting oil frescos, and self portraits of himself as a woman, all that, i believe was his pushing the boundaries of his culture.
