Why was the painting titled "the baptism of Christ" so lousy except for the part da Vinci painted?

In 1477, Verrochio made a painting titled "The Baptism of Christ," a project which Leonardo assisted by painting an angel on the far left of the picture. Why was the painting so lousy except for the part da Vinci painted?
