IF "supper" means the last meal of a day, then why did Leonardo Da Vinci name his painting 'The last Supper'?

What usually results strange in the last supper is that the saint to the left of Christ seems a woman (Mary Magdalen, her wife?) and the hand wich is not known to who belongs (to the left on the table)
