My teacher yelled at me? Is it fair?

Well, if you are an atheist you don't have a God, hammer or not. You should have responded as such. Insulting anyone's beliefs is wrong just live and let live. That said, you disrespected the teacher's authority in front of the class, legitimate grounds for punitive action.
